a – é usado antes de som de consoante.
an – é usado antes de som de vogal.
a boy; a year; a horse; a university; an egg; an hour.
A e An são usados somente no singular.
Exemplo: He is a skier, but they are swimmers.
ARTIGO DEFINIDO
The: o, a, os, as.
the boy – the boys the girl – the girls
É usado:
- a) antes de substantivos mencionados anteriormente.
I see a boy. The boy is swimming.
- b) antes de substantivo único na espécie, ou considerado como único, ou quando particularizado.
the North Pole;
the boys of our school;
the sea;
the strongest;
the weather;
the only;
- c) antes de nomes de oceanos, mares, rios, montanhas (plural), ilhas (plural) e países (plural).
the Atlantic;
the Hebrides;
the Alps;
the United States;
the Mediterranean;

- d) antes de nomes de instrumentos musicais, de nomes de família.

- e) antes de substantivo ou adjetivo que representa uma classe ou espécie.
